How to Accurately Analyze Your Web Site Traffic

The analyzing of your web traffic statistics is not only very important but can also be an invaluable tool for a number of various reasons. But before you can make full use of this tool, you need to understand how to interpret the data.
The majority of web hosting companies will provide you with basic web traffic information (web stats) that you can easily use to analyze the traffic you receive. My favorite is “Awstats” because of the amount of stats it gives and the categories they are broken down into. You server stats is highly recommended. But if this is not possible then at the very least utilize a quality visitor analysis site such as sitemeter.com (it is free but requires you place a code on each page you want statistics for).
Let’s start by examining the most common data – the average visitors to your site on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
These common statistics show you the most accurate measure of your web site’s activity. Most people commonly assume that the more traffic you see recorded, the better your web site is doing, but this is an inaccurate assumption. What is important is the behavior of your visitors once they come to your web site. This behavior is what will give you an accurate gauge on the effectiveness of your site.
Often there is a big misconception about this traffic, or what is commonly known as “hits” and what truly effective traffic to your site is. Why? Because hits simply mean the amount of information requests received by the server your domain is hosted on. This includes graphics. Each graphic you have on your site is calculated as a hit by each person that visits. One person equals multiple hits for not only their actual visit but everything downloaded at the time of the visit.
With that realization then it becomes clear why hits are not useful in analyzing your web site traffic.
Two things to keep in mind is one, the more hits that you get to your site the better or more precise your analysis of the overall trends in visitor behavior will become. The second is to remember that if the number of hits you get is smaller or anomalous in nature, this can distort the analysis.
The goal here is to use the web statistics to figure out how well or how poorly your site is working for your visitors.
One stat to use in determining this is the “Visits duration” or “Visit length”. This will show you on average how much time is spent on your web site by each visitor.
Naturally if your stat’s highest percentage shows you that the time spent by your visitors is short it can indicate an underlying problem. I.e. say your stats say that 70% of visitors are staying from only 0-30 seconds per visit…
The problem can be a number of things from minor to serious. Such as your site’s keywords could be attracting un-targeted visitors to you. Or another possibility is that you have a slow loading site caused from either large images, placement of large codes in the source, linking to images on other sites that can be down, therefore keeping your site from loading while your server is waiting for their images to show, and so on.
All the above and many other reasons can cause a visitor to leave quickly.
This knowledge of how much time visitors spend on your site can be used to pinpoint and fix specific problems.
Test this by changing what you think the problem is then continue to watch to see if the duration of visits increases after each change.
Your web traffic stats can also help you determine effective and ineffective areas of your web site, such as a particular page on your site that you want to direct your visitors to. These stats will tell you how many people are going from your main page to this desired page and how long they are stay on it, etc.
If the results aren’t good then you can try a number of things to increase them, like making the link to this page more noticeable on your main page.
Then also in the complete opposite direction, if you notice that visitors are spending a lot of time on pages that are not producing results toward the goals you have set, you can remove some of your sales copy and marketing focus to that particular page.
Another useful stat is the “Exit” one that shows you what pages your visitors are leaving your site from…
Every web site has expected exit pages, such as the final order page or a contact opt in / join form. These are expected pages for your visitor to leave your site from.
However, if you notice that a significant percentage of visitors are exiting your web site on a page not designed for that purpose, you will want to closely examine that particular page to see if there may be a problem within the content and/or images. You will be surprised how many times you will discover various problems, such as an error in the HTML may be causing the page not to load correctly in certain browsers or possibly a piece of code you have to load an affiliate banner or something may be keeping the entire page from working.
Once you pinpoint and correct any possible errors, or perform a few minor modifications in content or graphics, this could have a significant impact on keeping visitors moving through your site towards your intended route instead of exiting at the wrong page.
Another very valuable piece of information you will get from your web site analysis is the “Search” stats which will show you which keywords and keyword phrases were used to find you on and visit your site.
An analysis of these keywords and phrases will show you if your site is bringing you the targeted visitors you need to create signups to your contact list and order your products.
The more targeted the visitor is – meaning that they find what they are looking for on your site, and fill out your contact form or make a purchase – the more valuable that keyword is.
On the other end of the spectrum, if you find a large number of visitors being directed, or in this case, misdirected to your site by a particular keyword or phrase that is not targeted to what you offer in the way of content and products, then you need to remove that from your sales copy or adjust it to fit better towards your target audience.
Since keywords are so important to bringing quality visitors to your site who are ready to do business with you. A correct analysis of the keywords your visitors are using to find your site will give you a much needed understanding of your visitor’s needs and motivations.
One of the highest and most profitable achievements you can reach with your web site is to be found by visitors on keywords they are using to find exactly what you are selling.
Just by the few examples I have given, it is easy to see how these statistics will reveal vital information about the effectiveness of individual pages, visitor habits, why they visited your site and much more… Highly crucial information needed for any Internet marketing campaign, if you want it to succeed.
