Banner Design Tips

It is no secret that strategically placed banner advertising can bring you traffic from all over the Internet quickly and usually very affordable to even free. However to maximize the results of your banner ads you will need to start with the banner design.

Below you will find 6 important banner design tips to help you create more effective banner ads.

Banner Size – This is the first decision to be made when you start to design your banner. You will want to choose from the most commonly used sizes allowed on the majority of sites offering banner advertising. These are determined in what is called pixels and the top most common sizes from the largest to the smallest and listing width first are:

The Header type banner – 728X90px
The Skyscraper banner – 120x600px
The Login or Splash page banner ad – 600x300px
The Standard banner – 468x60px
The Button banners – These banners range anywhere from 125x125px – 100x100px for the square shapes to 120x60px – 88x33px for your rectangle shapes.

Banner Colors – This is the next decision to be made. It can be very versatile in what you choose from images to background colors and font colors. You will want to choose colors that go well with each but also contrast each other well for easy reading. i.e. if you use a dark background color or image then your lettering should be done in a light color of some type and visa versa. Striking a balance between eye catching and readability is the optimum goal.

Banner Wording – This is one of the most important banner design decisions you will make. Similar to a classified ad the best rule of thumb on this is to say as much as you possibly can without using too many words. So choose strong descriptive words that are extremely targeted to what you are advertising on the banner. This will help reach your targeted audience and ensure not only that they are interested in what you are selling but will likely click through to your advertised link.

Banner Fonts – Choosing the right fonts is also very important. A good way to decide this is based on the size of the font. Such as you will want one large and bold line for your attracting, targeted description, a title you could say. Now if the size of your banner allows you to have this title fairly large than you have a few more choices in the fonts that are harder to read when used on smaller font lines. i.e. Impact only reads well in larger font sizes, and for smaller font size you will want to use easy readable fonts such as Arial or Tahoma.

Banner Animation – Whether or not to have animation in your banner is up to you. But when it comes to attracting attention animated banners still rank very high. When nicely done such as animating words like “Click Here” or maybe even an animated image it can and usually does increase your click through ratio.

Banner Optimization – Not so much as a decision but a very important step none the less optimizing your banner is usually handled automatically by the software you are using, via a few options chosen by you. It has to do with the file size of the image and how the final banner will look. For example if you are creating a .jpg type file you will be given choices that will make the banner load faster. Stay alert and watch closely before your final save of your designed banner though because as you make the .jpg type file size smaller it can greatly reduce the clarity of the images on the banner. So you will need to find a happy medium on file size and appearance quality. This again has some standards on size as well. File size is measured in kilobytes (kb), megabytes (mb), etc. While larger file sizes are now more allowed than they used to be, some sites do still have a limit, so it would be wise to look around the sites you are considering advertising on and see if there are certain restrictions.

Use these banner design tips on the next banner you create and watch your click through ratio increase. The better you get at it the higher ratio you will get. Testing is the key on all of the above tips. Test different headlines, colors, animated and not animated and so forth. Soon you will be a pro banner designer.
